cell phones are everywhere, all the time. they are instant access to the web and to others. they are already paid for. most kids already know how to use them. if we could/would teach them how to use cells to expand their thinking...oh my. hard to imagine the possibilities.
Nowadays, most teens have or have access to a cell phone. The two seem to be inseparable which makes it difficult at times when it becomes a distraction in the classroom. To incorporate this technology we can focus on improving literacy skills. Many students do not necessarily know what register or type of writing is required in different writing situations. Or to put it another way, when it's o.k. to use slang or informal text and when it's not. Text messaging has become very popular. One can use abbreviations and not even write complete sentences to get their message across. This use of informal abbreviated writing is transferring to written assignments in the classroom. Therefore, we can use the cell phone and it's type of writing to help students understand what type of writing is appropriate in specific situations such an in an essay or an e-mail. An example of a text conversation between two people can be put together and shown on the overhead. Students can go from there to create a more formal text that is appropriate for a specific writing assignment. This is just one example of how a cell phone could be used to expand learning in the classroom because the possibilities are endless.

Seems like there's lots of different ways to do lots of different things.
